Plus: what the heck is Danaher's "Clamp Guard?"
The Jiu Jitsu E-mail Newsletter
What up Flowrollers, it’s a great day to master the art of 'accidentally' arriving just after warm-ups are finished.
In our most recent poll, it turns out that the sweet spot in weight you all are willing to give up in a grappling match is 50lbs:
That’s a lot! I’m not sure I’m so confident haha. Particularly against someone younger… if they have any wrestling experience giving up 50 or more pounds is a dicey situation.
I’m definitely with Lacy on this one though, if I’m giving up a weight advantage I want to get on top and STAY on top. No playing guard 🙅
Alright let’s get to it, slap-and-bump 👊🏻
THE MAIN EVENT 🚨
Gordon Ryan posted some awesome videos on his Instagram of him grappling with UFC legend Jon Jones:
Jones is looking legit!!! Cool to see him paying respect to some of the bigger grappling athletes lately.
This match got me thinking, how would Gordon Ryan do in MMA if he put his mind to it? Sure, his teammate Garry Tonon has seen success in the cage… but transitioning from BJJ to MMA is no joke.
King Gordon would probably be fighting at light heavyweight (205lbs) so he’d be up against total beasts like Jan Blachowics and Alex Periera.
What do you think… if Gordon trained all-out for it, could he make it to the top 10 of a UFC division in the next 5 years?
Could Gordon Ryan earn a top 10 UFC ranking with 5 years of dedicated MMA training?Vote to see results: |

TECHNIQUE CORNER 🧠
One of John Danaher’s favorite - but lesser known - techniques is the clamp guard. It’s a particularly effective way for smaller fighters to manage the distance heavier opponents. Learn it here:
