🥋 "Just Show Up" or Nah?

Plus: Rener Gracie donates his expert witness payment to charity.

The Jiu Jitsu E-mail Newsletter

What up Flowrollers, it’s a great day to put Pop Rocks in your training partners' mouth guards.

Very close results in Monday’s poll about the $46 million verdict no one can stop talking about:

I’m torn on this one. Rener Gracie’s rebuttal video was pretty convincing… but I also feel like he could sell me a bag of ice on the North Pole.

One thing that doesn’t seem disputable is that there was no malicious intent here, and everyone wishes the student a speedy recovery. I think this Flowroller response giving both sides a little credit is reasonable:

If you’re still going down this rabbit hole, this breakdown by Andrew Wiltse was fair and balanced (also hilarious of course, Andrew is a GOAT):

Alright let’s get to it, slap-and-bump 👊🏻

THE MAIN EVENT 🚨

I saw posts on both YouTube and Reddit today talking about the topic of “just showing up.” You hear so often that time on the mats is they key to progressing in Jiu Jitsu.

But is it really? Black belt Chasen Hill disagrees:

and there was also some lively discussion on r/bjj surrounding the topic:

In my opinion, “just showing up” really is 80% of the battle. I remember Keenan Cornelius talking about two hypothetical groups of brand new students training for 2 months:

  1. Learned technique and theory only, with no live rolling

  2. Only rolled, with zero instruction or technique

He said group 2 would absolutely demolish group 1, and I tend to agree with him. Let’s hear what you all think…

Is "just showing up" enough to get good at Jiu Jitsu?
