🥋 Here's Why Jon Jones' Coach Won't Promote Him

Plus: when should you kick out a disruptive student?

The Jiu Jitsu E-mail Newsletter

What up Flowrollers, it’s a great day to get that Jocko neck tattoo you've always wanted.

Thursday’s poll on taking time off was a mixed bag:

Personally I’ve felt all three. I’ve had breaks from an injury where I come back feeling amazing because I’ve been cross training and thinking about Jiu Jitsu a ton.

But of course I’ve also had breaks where I rewatch every season of 24 and rack up a 5 figure DoorDash bill… no good. Completely agree with James’ take here:

Alright let’s get to it, slap-and-bump 👊🏻

THE MAIN EVENT 🚨

I’m sure you all saw Jon Jones’ incredibly impressive guillotine finish of Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.

But if you’ve been living under a rock, it was one of those submissions where you watch it in realtime and say “WTF?” Then you rewind it, play it frame-by-frame, and realize…. dayummmm that was tight.

Clearly a black belt level finish. Jones is a mere purple belt though!

Jiu Jitsu Times dropped a really interesting interview with Jones’ Jiu Jitsu coach, Roberto Tussa Alencar.

Jones trains under the traditional (and sometimes controversial) Gracia Barra affiliation. Alencar says that since Jones isn’t training twice a week in the gi, he can’t promote him.

That’s… a take. Not training in the gi certainly hasn’t prevent schools like 10th Planet from producing undeniably elite level Jiu Jitsu talent. What do you think:

Should Jon Jones be promoted to black belt?

Man, I just found this channel and it’s soooo good. If you haven’t seen Game Theory Jiu Jitsu’s leg lock series it is an amazing breakdown of how leg entanglement positions actually work.
